The Masteka Cup 2026

Two legs, one bar detour, an abnormal heart rate, and a finale on the whitest sand in the world.

Every great sporting rivalry needs three things: athletes, controversy, and a bar within reach.

Leg one — 27 July

The inaugural, undecided

It began en route to Happy Bay: two double skis, honour at stake. In boat one, the seeded world-champion pairing of Mark Williams on sweep with Sean as the engine. In boat two, the backpacker boat, Nick Edmonds steering with Claude hanging in there. It was close. It was tough. And it ended, officially, without a result, after one crew was documented making an unscheduled stop.

Steward’s archive — the bar detour

The exhibits stand as submitted: one ski, ashore, transported by resort quad bike toward refreshments; one crew, in remarkably high spirits, administered a cold Corona before any finish line was crossed. The telemetry recorded an abnormal high heart rate. The stewards recorded nothing, because they were also at the bar.

Leg two — 30 July

The finale at Whitehaven

Three days of simmering later, the Cup was restructured into its true form: an annual multi-discipline event, two teams, best of three rounds. On one side, the Couples. On the other, the Backpackers, carrying the spirit of the backpacker boat into open competition. The venue: a court carved into Whitehaven itself.

The official scorecard

Round one — beach pickleball: Backpackers, five games to two. The Couples' protests about sand conditions were noted and ignored.

Round two — the dizzy relay: ten spins around a stick, run, tag your swimmer, run back; three times through, with the final spin-and-run at double distance. Won by the Couples by a few metres across the line, in scenes of catastrophic balance. One round apiece.

Round three — the tiebreaker: a beach sprint relay on the squeaking silica. Taken by the Couples, and with it, everything.

After three rounds on the sand at Whitehaven, the stewards entered the final result into the record:

“Pickleball to the Backpackers, five-two. The dizzy relay to the Couples, by metres. And the sprint relay to settle it: the Couples are your Masteka Cup 2026 champions.”
